The Lenexa Arts Council is excited to announce the second season of the Lenexa Community Orchestra, under the direction of Richard Ryan. We are looking for community volunteers to play in the orchestra and serve in other volunteer positions.
The 2018 season will include three concerts. Concert dates will be June 30, July 28 and Aug. 11 (inclement weather makeup concert dates will be the next day – July 1, July 29 and Aug. 12). Volunteer musicians will participate in four evening rehearsals prior to each concert (dates are tentatively planned for the two Monday and Thursday evenings prior to each concert). Each rehearsal will be between 2-3 hours. We would love for orchestra members to participate in all three concerts, but we realize that summer schedules are busy, and some musicians may not be available for all three.
We are looking to build a community of artists who want to create music together. While we strive to be inclusive and our philosophy is for a no-audition policy, we recognize that some decisions will be necessary to ensure the ensemble is well balanced and musicians are at an appropriate skill level. The conductor will consider musicians’ experience and resumes when making assignments. High school students are welcome to volunteer, but they should be at the all-state level. Volunteer opportunities in the orchestra are subject to space and instrumentation. The orchestra conductor will make the final decisions regarding personnel in the orchestra. Musicians are required to bring their own instruments, and percussionists must bring their own sticks/mallets. Deadline to apply is May 1. Anyone who applies after the deadline will be considered only if a position is available.
After volunteers sign up for a position, the conductor will follow up with the musicians to find out about their availability for the concerts and more details about the musicians’ experience to help with assignment decisions.
